Handcrafted Characteristics Guide
Celebrating the Beauty of the Perfectly Imperfect
At En Gold, we honour the skill and dedication behind every handcrafted piece we create. Our furniture is made by artisans who work with natural materials, using traditional techniques passed down through generations. This process is never about perfection in the machine-made sense — instead, it’s about preserving the individuality of each piece and the story within its material.
These unique characteristics are a natural part of the craft and should be celebrated as hallmarks of authenticity.
Visible Join Lines
Many of our stone designs feature rounded edges that require each small ring of fossilstone to be intricately carved, shaped, and placed by hand. This creates visible lines between tiles, especially around curved surfaces. These joins are a mark of the meticulous, time-intensive process used to form seamless shapes from individual stone pieces- a testament to the artisan’s precision and patience.
Natural Holes and Dips
Fossilstone is naturally soft and porous. Larger natural holes are often filled during production, but smaller pinholes may remain. You may also see gentle dips in the surface, particularly along the edges. These are not faults — they are part of the material’s natural form, shaped by time and handcrafting.
Fossilised Etchings
Our fossilstone comes from Cebu, Philippines, where it is hand-harvested from limestone rich in ancient marine life. The organic imprints of seashells, corals, and other natural materials can be seen throughout the surface. These patterns are entirely unique, telling the story of the earth and sea from which the stone was formed.
Colour Variation
Because each tile is carved from a natural source, there may be variations in colour from one section to another — from warm, sandy hues to cooler stone greys. These tonal differences add depth and character, ensuring no two pieces are ever exactly alike.
Uneven Surfaces
Unlike mass-produced, machine-finished products, handcrafted pieces often have slight variations in surface level. These subtle undulations reflect the human hand in the making and enhance the organic nature of the design.
Why We Love the Imperfections
Perfection in nature is never uniform. The beauty of handcrafted artistry lies in its individuality — every mark, line, and variation is a reminder that your piece was shaped by human hands, not machines. These imperfections are what make your furniture inherently unique, carrying the warmth, heritage, and authenticity that only true craftsmanship can provide.
